Do Americans think Beckham will help their soccer? lol?
Sometimes, i laugh when i hear, oh, beckham is here to save soccer in US! How stupid is that? between us, do you REALLY think that guy will save soccer here? The guy is done playing! No decent team want beckham and if they did, the reason must be for his jersey’s sale and not his talent on the pitch!
The guy is just an average players whose carreer went up because of women, that’s it! People will say he scores free kick! Well i got news for you, Juniho of LYON ( French ligue) scored more Free kick than your Beckham!
he’s famous because of women, and because of his wife! Not because of his soccer skill!
Also, if he wanted to help U.S soccer, i don’t think it was necessary for him to ask that much money, and also get his jersey’s sales, things he did not have back in Madrid or Manchester! That guy sucks and he’s like Figo or any other player that will move to a less skilled league to play! What, who the hell he think he is? huh? jesus? Please!
@ HEYUMBRI, Don’t call me how, t’es qu’une sale pute, mal elevee! connard egare! thcrrr!
That’s right! American ndont care about soccer! You focus on the wrong stuff, like baseball, or golf, or other crap! The world enjoys soccer but you! For once, you should take example on the rest of the world, just for once!
Only players that want to come in America are players that are about to retired and want some money! Players, around 33 or 35 yrs old! No talent like Rooney, or Drogba or Ronaldo C, will come! They might when they turn 33…
I don’t care, I don’t watch soccer.
As an american i dont really give a da** about him ive never even heard of him before the came over here.
No , maybe the local economy though
)
Soccer will never be popular. NFL (football) will always rein supreme!
nobody here likes soccer except immigrants.
A better question is do Americans care about soccer ? NO.
I think he is here to try to get American’s to be more interested in soccer, not really working though.
Uh…sometimes it’s not about talent. Sometimes it’s about marketing and creating interest. Pele was a great player; but the buzz he brought to the sport in the US was far and above what his talent level was at that point. If attendance goes up, more people take a interest in what is a pretty much 3rd tier sport here, and it sells mdse, it worked.
Sorry, but soccer is still growing in the US. Eventually we will get good enough to destroy every other wussy country in the world. So yea, the 30% of America that is into Soccer get excited when they see an American with raw talent. Dont worry, soon America will rule european football as we rule every other Major Sport.
He will help the game here in California.
Granted that he is more of a specialist and support player, than a game controller player, but he will be good for MLS over a 3 to 4 year period.
Beckham WAS a good playing and he probably still is but his wife dragged him downhill and now he doesn’t care about playing football because all he cares about is the money.
BECKHAMITIS IS COMING TO SOCCER, FASHIONS, HOLLYWOOD CULTURE/EVENTS,
THE BECKHAM HAVE ALREADY CAUSE A DENT IN PEOPLE WANTING THE SAME CLOTHES THEY WEAR AND THE CARS THEY DRIVE.
ONE WOMAN PAID A TAXICAB DRIVER $50.00 TO DRIVE PAST THEIR NEW DIGS TO TAKE PICTURES.
AS FAR AS SOCCER IS CONCERNED. LOTS OF KIDS PLAY SOCCER IN HS, AND DROP THE SPORT WHEN THEY GO TO COLLEGE. THE POPULARITY OF THE SPORT, INCREASE DOLLARS BEING PAID WILL DRIVE A NEW CORP OF PLAYERS< INCLUDING MINORITIES>
well Beckham here in England is “the ultimate celeb” his like our football god..but i’am not sure about the move to the us,i don’t think it will benefit him in any way, however for victoria this is it, shes got Hollywood written all over her.Another thing is the money his got on offer and most poeple would not resist a cool £125 million wud they?
No decent team will want him? hes a starter on real. Juninho is older so yea hes scored more free kicks but just because he isn’t the best doesn’t mean that u wouldn’t want him. In order to improve the league its gotta improve in popularity and if ur gona try to tell me that when it was announced he was coming here it didn’t put the mls in the news then ur just dumb. And he was just the captain of england so im guessing hes above average.
Not that you have a bias towards the guy or anything……But yes, Becks is wayy past his prime. Granted he can still play the game, but he is no where near the dominant form that he once was. To answer your question, no, Becks will not resurect American soccer. We simply don’t care about the sport, unless we win something that is. It seems that nothing can unseat the three monsters (NFL, NBA, MLB).
I love the way 1/2 of the responses are so idiotic. He sucks, he’s old, soccer sucks, etc. Beckham’s soccer is not going to have rednecks ordering GOLTV or FSC anytime soon. He is a very well known soccer player and is going to help sell shirts and tickets for the LA scum. He’s getting to the end of his career but anyone who watches the footy knows he’s still a dangerous player on the pitch. Real Madrid still plays him so enough said. I think this is a good signing for MLS, I hope thay can get their heads out of their asses and sign some more good ones -
It’ll be really popular for a bit then once the novelty wears off no one is going to care anymore.
I see the MLS getting bigger, but it will take some time… especially with the conflicting sports.. I think in Canada it is getting very big (and is big but thats because a lot of people here are from countries where football is the main sport) but in the United States? ehh.. it’ll take time..
Wow, props to the OP for getting the “voice” of the people who need not be apart of the discussion of soccer in America. The last time i checked, soccer wasn’t harming anyone in the US so why the harsh opinions?
It is true that Beckham is not the best player but it’s not his goal to play with the best. It’s to be apart of something bigger than himself or what Euro club he plays for.
The fact is: Beckham WILL help the growth of the sport in America. He is a face. America loves faces, even when they serve no purpose to society; see Paris Hilton.
DB is with Adidas who also sponsors the MLS. Another huge marketing plus for the MLS. He did not ask for money, he received the offer in order to make way for future European and South American players to have incentive to play here sooner than later.
First of, I am a Yank and an avid soccer fan and have followed the MLS since its inception. I think Beckham will help the MLS immensely in the short run. Say what you will about his skills( and for the record I agree with you that he is entering the twighlight of his career), he has marquee value that the MLS needs. My wife is excited about seeing a Galaxy game now and she knows nothing about soccer. Alot of people who don’t know anything about the game are going to tune in or go out to the game because his name is so recognizable. People recognize him from the tabloids as well as the “Bend it Like Beckham” movie. I can’t think of another player in Europe that has that kind of star power in the US. The trick will be converting some of those people into hardcore soccer fans. Can it be done? I hope so.
The MLS is at a cross-roads now. It will be interesting to see whether MLS can make the transition from a niche sport like indoor football or lacrosse and gain the fanbase that the NBA, NFL and MLB have. For those of you who doubt that the MLS can be that big, remember that it took the NFL and NBA nearly 50 years to reach the peak of their popularity.
Quite a few of these answers are poor generalizations that DO NOT reflect all the views and opinions of Americans towards football (soccer). Personally I think Beckham will bring more fans to the MLS and increase sales and may attract other European players which may then attract more themselves. Thats about all he is going to do. I’m still excited about him coming over here and playing though. He, himself wont do much more than increase it’s popularity and help attract other European players to the MLS. He’s not going to personally save “soccer” here, no, but he will be the start of an increased effort to make it better here. That’s all he can do himself. He also isn’t single handedly going to raise the level of play here either but he will help to raise it. I think he may raise the level of play for the LA Galaxy a bit but not all of MLS. I can’t wait to see how and what he does as a player over here.
i think it will in promoting it but in skill not really cause i bet that all the money that they paid him to play in america will mess him up because when they start earning that much money they start forgetting about the love for the game
well season tickets are now sold out in LA and all his away games are sold out so yes i do …idiot
I agree with jc’s answer above. Thanks for saying that, jc. I can’t wait for Beckham to arrive here in the US. Welcome David Beckham!!!
I really feel sorry for you north Americans. You are not able to share the pation of soccer, especially the worldcup. Beckhams new salary compared to the old one is like being a homeless dude asking for change. Seriously that guy just wants to make an impact but he needs money too lol.
“dude the world does not care about your damnned military !! dont you get it !!!? the world worships soccer !!! And if you suck at soccer, well most of the countries wont think youre kewl !!! USA=United Soccer Atheists ! You might not believe this cuz ur north american but soccer is a religion every four years !!!! ”
“It is a really nice feeling man, i hope you and your people will feel it some day. Seeing your country in the worldcup, , each goal you open your window and scream GOAAAAAAAAAL MOTHERFUCKERS(thats what we do)along with all your neighbors. The whole country yelling Goal with the same spirit !!! To let know the world your contry rules !!! All of these in a simple soccer game…not war….Theres more man Worldcup…is….just like ricky martin said..Its the cup of the life, la copa de la vida !”
“Dude trust me if my country wins the worldcup there’d be no school the next day…see the magnitude of the meaning of the worldcup for the rest of the world….except you unfortunately cuz U SUCK !!!btw sometimes the president has to cancel events cuz your country would be playing >_< . Korea 2002, half the people in my school were absent(they were watchin our country playing) and luckily the ones who went to school also watched the worldcup cuz the teacher had a TV and called free period... "
"but you guys unfortunately will never be good at soccer, cuz that's just who you are...You like to spectate sports in your couch....eating your mcdonalds...but the ones who watch? soccer actually play it...and if theyre rly good they turn it into profession...hence brasil...italy...every1 plays soccer...peru...every1...loves...it. "
Lol i didnt write that im quoting from some guy, but I think its true it happens in my country as well I hope someday U.S worships soccer as the rest of us do and I hope Beckham makes an impact.
Here's where I got the quotes from

I really love your attitude. Beckham is a great player. You dont play for Man Unt, Real Madrid and captain the England national team just because of your good looks. I’m American and I love soccer!
